  • Scent of a Woman

I never liked perfumes (save a late 90s infatuation with The Gap's "Heaven") because they always seemed to magnify on my skin and give me a headache.  I also don't like the smell of flowers, so avoided anything that smelled like lilac, lavender, lily  - and even those flowers that began with other letters.   I had a brief stint with Chanel, bought by a boyfriend, and made some impulse fragrance purchases at the department store counter, trying to be grown up, but still couldn't find anything that worked for me.

I could not commit to a "signature scent" - despite what every woman's magazine drums into you about it - out of fear of being the woman with whom people hated to be in the elevator.   But - I found the solution at a Renegade Craft Fair booth a couple of years ago.

I found Sweet Tea Apothecary, and JT's knack for combining historical and literary references into perfect, non-elevator clearing scents that are subtle enough you will forget you are wearing them, but so interesting people will ask you about it.

Rollerball perfumes are the way to go for me - that way I control the amount I wear, and they are portable if I wanted to travel or reapply, so I am only stocking those.  If you fall in love with a fragrance, I can get it in a larger size for you!

    Some of my favorites include:

Pemberley - scents from the gardens of the estate that inspired Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy

Dead Writers - unisex fragrance that anyone could wear in a musty library drinking tea and reading the classics

VII and Boylen - based on the signature scents of King Henry and doomed Queen Anne

Pamplemousee - because it is my favorite French word ("grapefruit")

There are even more to try in the shop, with explanations of origins and fragrance notes.  I know it seems silly to buy perfume over the internet, when you can't smell it in person, but I have tried all of these and they are awesome (and have an interesting story if you are giving them as a gift - so your book loving friend will think it is cool even if they didn't love the smell.)

  • Dominos!

There are very few things I remember from my childhood, but one of the strongest memories I have of my Dad's family is playing with my Grandpa's red dominos on his dining room table in Houston, TX.

Dominos are cool to the touch, and fun to slide around on the slick tabletop, but these were special because they were red.  I had never seen red dominos before (or since) and I just thought they were the coolest thing when I was a kid.  As I grew up and grew out of going to see my grandparents very often, I forgot about the dominos.  But when we moved them in to an assisted living home a couple of years ago, I was delighted to see the dominos again, in a pride of place above the TV, where my Grandpa Jim would watch "Bonanza" and other westerns - or as he liked to called them, his "Rope Operas"

When he passed away, I knew that I wanted the red dominos to live with me, and I shall play with them again, but for now they look really good on my bookshelf at home.   Also as photo props with pretty prints in the shop.  Mostly I was just hunting for something red to photograph with them.

  • Alabama Love

    Letterpress Print

There are two states near and dear to my heart - New York, because I consider it home now, and North Carolina, because it is where I grew up.

The third state that I have some love for is Alabama.  Alabama is where my best friend lives, and where I lived for a little while during a particularly rough time in my life.  I had an idea in my head about what Alabama would be like (I am from the South after all, so a Redneck stereotype is not foreign to me) but it was not what I expected.  Though so much of it was because of the company I was keeping, I found Alabama full of promise, appreciation for the arts, and a bunch of nerds - my favorite!

So I was thinking about Alabama when I picked some items for the shop.  Huntsville, AL is known as Rocket City and so some rockets had to make it in!

So I snuck a few things into Plumfield that reminded me of Alabama (and some made in Alabama, like the necklace!) but you don't have to live there to enjoy them.   And while I hope to get back there soon, until I do, I will just enjoy these lovely pieces.  You can too - no matter where you live!
